Team Need for Speed Wins the Dubai 24hr

Sunday, January 23, 2011
With Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed on the near horizon, the developers of the game (and the drivers themselves) must be thrilled to see that Team Need for Speed in cooperation with Schubert Motorsport crossed the finish line in front of everyone else after a grueling 24 hours in Dubai.

Team Need for Speed’s #76 BMW Z4 Coupé won the Dubai 24h a full three laps ahead of the next contenders: the #4 AF Corsa Ferrari F430 and the #7 Black Falcon Mercedes Benz AMG SLS. The team’s sister car #77 finished in 5th place.

Team Need for Speed won with completing 594 laps of the Dubai Autodrome. The team consisted of Tommy Milner, Augusto Farfus, Claudia Hurtgen and Edward Sandstrom. Patrick Soderlund, an executive at Electronic Arts who usually drives #77, was out with a back injury but praised the team for their win.

Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed is scheduled for release on March 24 in PAL territories and March 29 for NTSC.

Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed – Video Trailor

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

EA has released the first video teaser of Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed, giving us first ideas what Slightly Mad Studios’ second Need for Speed title will bring in 2011.

The video teaser does not contain any actual gameplay footage but reveals some cars as the trailer features FIA GT2 & GT3 race cars such as the Porsche 911 GT3-RSR, the Audi R8 LMS and the BMW Z4 GT3 which is driven by Need for Speed producer Patrick Soderlund in real life. Unlike the first Shift, the racing cars are dressed up in proper real-life liveries including FIA GT number plates & logos, indicating that the title has an official series license.

The trailer depicts a scene at Spa Francorchamps during the night, hinting that night racing and maybe even 24h racing will be included in the new Shift installment.

Patrick Soderlund on Shift Franchise Direction

Thursday, November 11, 2010
A few days ago when news surfaced that Slightly Mad Studios’ upcoming sequel to Need for Speed Shift would be named “Unleashed”, several readers wondered if that’s an indication on the direction the title is going.

Now, a very interesting interview with EA’s Patrick Soderlund on the future of the Need for Speed Shift franchise has been released by Eurogamer. Soderlund explains that while other NFS titles will be taking care of the arcade oriented market, Shift will continue to cater to the simulation-oriented players as EA positions the franchise as cross-platform alternative to console driving titles such as Forza Motorsport & Gran Turismo:

“The idea for us is to come out with a holiday product, around Christmas time every year, that is true to the core tenets of an action NFS game, which is usually what most of our consumers are after.

We also think we can compete and ultimately become market-leading in the simulation authentic motorsport segment. One of the strongest points we have is, apart from the fact we have a very talented developer working with us and we now have an established brand underneath the NFS umbrella in that segment, we also have the advantage of being a multi-platform offering.

Forza can only be bought on Xbox and Gran Turismo is only available on PlayStation. We’re the only one right now that is of a significant weight that can offer something up on all those platforms.”

Need for Speed Shift:2

Monday, August 09, 2010
EA has just confirmed that Need for Speed Shift 2 is in development, the title is due to be released in the fourth quater of 2011.

VirtualR has learned that the sequel is again being developed by Sligthly Mad Studios whose roots go back to the GTR simulation series for the PC. Released in September 2009, Need for Speed Shift aimed to bring the franchise back to a more simulation-oriented audience, selling almost five million copies for the PC and gaming consoles.

A month ago, a first rumor regarding a successor to Slightly Mad Studio’s highly-popular Need for Speed Shift title surfaced after a former SMS employee mentioned Need for Speed Shift 2 in his LinkedIn profile.

Back then, the rumor had been denied as being caused by a mere typo and even now, Slightly Mad Studio’s won’t officially confirm their involvement.

When asked for confirmation, Slightly Mad Studio’s Ian Bell seemed surprised the game had been mentioned. While stating that he can’t discuss details of projects that haven’t been released by a publisher, Ian said there will be a project released by them soon that will raise the bar for racers in many areas.

Stay tuned for much more on Need for Speed Shift 2!

Need for Speed Shift 2 Coming….maybe.

Thursday, July 15, 2010
Back in September 2009, Slightly Mad Studios and EA released Need for Speed Shift, pushing the franchise towards simulation-oriented gaming after years of Need for Speed arcade titles.

And even though the 2010 E3 Expo passed by without any news on a new Need for Speed from the British developer, a hot rumor started circulating the net yesterday, getting people excited about Need for Speed Shift 2.

It all started with Chris Mcclure’s LinkedIn profile in which Mcclure, former senior programmer at Slightly Mad Studios, claimed to have worked on Need for Speed Shift 2 among other titles.

Following all the buzz, Mcclure has corrected his profile to only include Need for Speed Shift, stating that it was a mere typo.

Given that Mcclure was part of SMS until February 2010, he could theoretically have been involved in the early development of a Shift sequel. It remains to be seen whether this was really just a typo or a case of leaked info on an upcoming title.

E3 2010: What 3D Brings to Racing Games: Don't start your engine without your 3D glasses.

Sunday, July 04, 2010
IGN Hilary Goldstein gives her views on three 3D driving pre release titles at E3.

I've had the chance to play three of the biggest racing games of the show in 3D -- Gran Turismo 5, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and MotorStorm Apocalypse. For a little background, I have consistently stated that I have little interest in 3D gaming and no desire to sit in my house wearing big clunky glasses (over my personal big clunky glasses). I find first-person shooters in 3D to be a bit much -- Crysis 2 made me a little nauseous and didn't add anything to the experience. So, now you know my stance coming into E3. After playing racing games in 3D, my position has changed slightly. Racing games gain something legitimate in 3D, enough to make even myself reconsider the objection to wearing dorky glasses while lounging on my couch.

The key benefit for 3D in racing games is an added depth of field. As the scenery recedes into the background it becomes easier to see the track ahead (as it would if you were driving in real life) and to better navigate potential hazards. Each of the three games offers something different for 3D gaming but shows its potential for the genre.

Criterion admits it still has some work to do on the 3D implementation for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, but it already looks impressive. The 3D isn't in your face, though the plan is to have some objects flying towards your field of vision in the midst of massive car crashes. Mostly, the 3D has more subtlety to it -- so much so that a minute into a chase, I already forgot I was watching something in 3D. It seems natural. And I found myself better able to anticipate calamities, dodging oncoming traffic with ease. This 3D isn't a gimmick in NFS; it's an advantage. I haven't found that to be true of many 3D-capable games.

MotorStorm: Apocalypse is the most impressive 3D game I've seen. Like Need for Speed, it offers a slight driving advantage, though not as much. That's because MotorStorm is built in tighter lanes and on linear tracks (where Need for Speed is an open-world game). Obstacles come so quickly, that added depth of field doesn't really matter. Where MotorStorm impresses is in the incredible atmosphere created by 3D technology. The game spews particle effects everywhere. You'll drive through smoke and dust clouds, watch buildings crumble as you race along their surface. 3D makes what would be an innocuous tuft of smoke feel like a tangible object rushing at you. Seeing embers of a crash in the foreground as you rush towards a narrow opening in a ruined city 20 meters in the distance really enhances the sense of danger and the thrill of speed. It's an awesome experience and it just wouldn't be the same in 2D.

Gran Turismo 5 is the least impressive of the 3D racing games at E3. The 3D doesn't do much to enhance the driving experience, because there are no crazy particle effects like MotorStorm and none of the split-second decisions Need for Speed mandates. But that doesn't mean the 3D is unwarranted or overdone. In fact, the 3D does one great thing for GT5: the cars have always been a star for Gran Turismo and seeing these beautifully rendered machines in full 3D gives an added level of realism. I can do without racing in GT5 in 3D, but seeing the cars modeled in a way that is as close to the real world version as possible is something special.

3D gaming is a big push for Sony and these three racing games show why. While not everyone will want to wear glasses while playing games at home, those who do will have a better racing experience. Who knows, maybe I'll even bite the bullet and give it a go.

Need for Speed - Pursuit

Friday, June 25, 2010
Based on Need for Speed Shift which personally I am a fan of a new version of NFS Pursuit is coming.  NFS titles are showing a lad in the 3D effort plus the later versions are D-BOX enabled giving 3D and full motion.  It may not be everyones cup of tea but given the tools EA should deliver a great title for those that like this race and driving style.  Here is what EA have to say.

This November, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit will transform online entertainment by bringing to life the adrenaline and intensity of high speed cop pursuits and changing the way that people connect and compete with their friends.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is being developed by Criterion Games, the developers behind the critically-acclaimed Burnout racing series. These renowned innovators are redefining action racing by delivering an experience that connects players through intense competition whether playing online together or taking on friends’ challenges.

At the heart of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is a suite of connected features called Need for Speed Autolog that enables players to connect, compare and compete with their friends effortlessly.

Exotic cars on the open road, the rush of the escape, the thrill of the takedown – this is Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.
