Sony has confirmed that its 24-inch Playstation-branded 3D TV/ monitor will be arriving in the UK and Europe this autumn. First unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2011 back in June, the tri-dimensional display is meant to provide an accessible entry point (read: a cheaper alternative to a full-fledged 3D-capable HDTV) for 3D gaming. Equipped with edge LED backlight and active-shutter 3D technologies, the Playstation 3D LCD monitor/ TV features the company’s proprietary “SimulView” functionality which allows two players to view two different full-screen pictures on the same screen, which is likely to contribute to a more exciting multiplayer gaming experience. To enjoy this feature both players will have to wear compatible 3D eyewear, but fret not, because Sony has thoughtfully included two pairs of 3D glasses with sets sold in the United Kingdom and Europe. |

Playstation 3D TV UK & Euro Release in Autumn
Sony Will Soon Have a 24-inch PlayStation 3D Monitor (CECH-ZED1)
|
Can’t say I’m surprised by the fact that Sony is getting back into making smaller displays after being gone for a while from that market and of course their return will be with a PlayStation themed 3D monitor. The PlayStation 3D Monitor (CECH-ZED1) Specifications:
|
It is interesting to note that the LCD panel will be a VA type and not TN as currently all of the active 3D LCD solutions on the market rely on the cheaper TN panels due to their faster response time. And using VA type of LCD panel with good enough response time would mean better color reproduction and wider viewing angles. |

Sony: 3D is a bigger leap than standard to high-definition
|
Sony's 3D development boss Simon Benson has told GamesIndustry.biz
that he believes the introduction of 3D is a more significant leap in
home entertainment than the shift from standard to high-definition.
Benson said 3D enables the player to use their vision correctly in
games, and is something they will recognise as a revolution - once
experienced it can create an expectation that all games should be
offering 3D as standard.
"I would say it's probably bigger, because it's completely different,"
said Benson when asked if he though 3D was a bigger jump than upgrading
to HD. "It's the first time you've switched on your other eye. With HD
we've gone for more resolution, which is great, more detail, better
quality, but suddenly you've just switched on the other eye for the
first time ever, you see the world with both eyes every day, yet in
everything that's being pumped through your television you've gone back
to seeing it as if you only had one. So really it's that level of
significance.
"3D's just another one of these big revolutions in the technology. It's
another of these step forwards that gives you something else, something
that was better than the last generation, and on it rolls."
|
For users concerned the effects of 3D may be over powering for long
periods of time, Benson said Sony is working on allowing players to
adjust the levels of 3D in their games, lessening the effect it
necessary.
"If people find that they want a more subtle 3D effect, they can do
that. It's all being considered to that degree... it's not that
everything in the world will always be 3D forever. I think 2D's still
very very much mainstream, and obviously one of the points we're making
is that we're not going to neglect 2D by any stretch.
"2D's still exceptionally important and 3D's just another option,
another thing that you can choose to make use of if that's what you
want."
Sony is expected to make a number of significant 3D announcements at E3 this week. |
E3 GT5 News Flash
|
Breaking News from E3: Gran Turismo 5 will be coming to the
Playstation 3 on November 2nd 2010 in North America and Latin America! (ED: I'm guessing at PAL counries before..!) Sony revealed the release date on their anual E3 Entertainment Expo
press conference after showing a brand new Gran Turismo 5 video trailer.
The release date was specifically mentioned to be for the American
versions, neither a European nor a Japanese release date have been
mentioned. The action-packed video trailer contained several new gameplay scenes
featuring most cars that have been seen before, including NASCAR action
at Indianapolis, Super GT cars, the Nordschleife, the Top Gear Test
Track and rallying. Furthermore, the trailer showed first impressions of
the long-awaited day & night cycle, leaving only weather as last to
be confirmed feature. Furthermore, the trailer revealed a partnership with Red Bull as both
Sebastian Vettel and Adrian Newey could be seen in the video as well as
Kazunori Yamauchi being on site at Red Bull’s headquarters hinting at
the inclusion of Red Bull’s Formula One car. |
Meanwhile, details on how the game will be released become available. GT 5 will be available as no-frills version and as Collectors Edition, containing various interesting gimmicks. The Collectors Edition will include the game, a 1:43 scale model of the Nissan GT-R V-Spec, a 300+ pages handbook with info on the cars and driving techniques as well as a coupon code for five DLC cars. The Collectors Edition is planned to go on sale for $99.99. ![]() |
Circuit de la Sarthe Confirmed in Latest GT5 Demo
|
This weekend hosts one of the most important motorsports events of the
year – The 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sony recently announced a
sponsorship-deal with Peugeot as both the Playstation brand and Gran
Turismo 5 are prominently featured on the French 908 HDi-FAP prototypes.
Furthermore, the French track is lined with Gran Turismo 5
advertisements, indicating that the next stage of promotion for the
much-anticipated Playstation 3 title has indeed started. French GT5 fans confirm that Circuit de la Sarthe will be shown off in the Gran Turismo 5 demo running at the company’s track-side PS3 booth. Roughly translated, the last line reads, “Come see an ultra realistic virtual preview of the mythical track of the 24H of Mans!” |

The GT Academy 2010 Experience [Video]
|
Lets take a look at the GT Academy five day event. This is one set of
dreams coming true. We expect this type of event to be a natural way
for motorsport to progress. Other manufacturers will work out that
connecting via sim racing to there public will net huge results. One
look what Nissan have achieved in terms of "standing" by GT5 drivers for
the Z cars. The PR is huge but more importantly the "love" is being
built. (Not that we required too much convincing on the new GTR!) Additionally, the driver gene pool is increased dramatically. That was proven with Lucas Ordanez's performance last year. The virtual to real is possible but wait until the sim drivers achieve star status it will make for a whole new motor sport world. |

PlayStation 3 to Soon Get Stereoscopic 3D Support in Firmware 3.30
|
Sony has announced on their blog a little more information about their
upcoming new System Software Update version 3.30 for the PlayStation 3
console that is supposed to be available shortly. And one of the
announced new features in the blog post is the much anticipated
stereoscopic 3D support for the console that will allow you to play
games in S3D mode. Sony does not announce an exact date when will the
update be released, but it does say it should be available in time for
the Bravia 3D HDTVs official release so this means this summer for sure.
Have in mind that at first the update will include stereoscopic 3D
support only for gaming, it seems that we’ll have to wait a bit more
before getting stereo 3D support for playing back Blu-ray 3D movies on
the console. This second update is expected to be available later this
year and maybe it can happen for example in the 3.40 system software
release, but nothing is sure as of this moment, so you should hold on a
bit longer for the 3D movies part. GT5 in 3D bring it on! |
