Mr Bean blitzes Top Gear track

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Car-loving comedian Rowan Atkinson has become the fastest celebrity driver on the popular motoring show Top Gear.

Making his long-awaited debut on the latest episode of the show overnight, Atkinson lapped the track more than half a second faster than the previous record holder.

Atkinson's time of 1:42.2 seconds bested fellow comedian John Bishop's 1:42.8 second lap, and was significantly faster than the previous high-profile record holder Tom Cruise - whose time was a 1:44.2.

"It is remarkable because when Bishop did that time and it was so much faster than Tom Cruise we thought it would never be beaten," Clarkson said on the show.

Atkinson is an amateur racer in historic events in the UK and his driving style was unspectacular but smooth and quick, drawing praise from Clarkson.

"What is interesting is all your times were very consistent, as is the mark of a great racing driver," Clarkson said. "Turns out you're in the wrong career."

The Mr Bean actor's passion for cars is well known but this was his first appearance on Britain's most famous car show. The publicity-shy star said he was reluctant to appear because people assumed he would be quick because he competes.

He currently races an historic Ford Falcon but has previously raced an Aston Martin V8 Zagato and a Renault 5 GT Turbo.

He has written for several leading car magazines and is very particular about choosing the right car to match his various characters. For his latest movie Johnny English Reborn he had Rolls-Royce build a custom car with a unique V16 engine.

His collection of road cars includes a McLaren F1, the one-time fastest car in the world, which he had lent to Top Gear for a previous episode.

He was also famously involved in an accident with the car when he ran into the back of a Rover.

He revealed on the show he has driven more than 65,000km in the three-seater V12-powered machine.

Kazunori Yamauchi Talks with Top Gear

Saturday, May 01, 2010

During his time at Snetterton to watch the two GT Academy 2010 finalists compete for the top spot, Kazunori Yamauchi talked with quite a few journalists. His last interview to be published is with BBC’s TopGear. As you would expect, there aren’t any bombshells, but here’s the most notable quotes:

What did you set out to achieve with Gran Turismo 5?
Since Gran Turismo first launched back in 1997 all the way up until Gran Turismo 4, the style hasn’t really changed. But now I wanted to make it a new package and style for this game genre.

Were there any cars you couldn’t get your hands on for GT5?
We’re still rushing with GT5 as we speak and will be doing so until the last possible moment, so we haven’t come to any conclusions on any of these just yet. There might be one or two cars which drop off if we run out of time.

How did you map out the TopGear test track on Gran Turismo 5?
We had a helicopter taking aerial photographs of the circuit, and had ground crews taking photos and measurements of the track all the way around. It took about three to four days to finish the whole thing.

Because of the interview’s high-profile, this is the first time many people are learning the show’s infamous test track will be featured in GT5, but it was actually confirmed all the way back in 2007. Regardless, there’s going to be millions of people gunning for the Stig’s lap times someday!

Top Gear takes on F1 with Dom Duhants. What's an F1 simulator like?

Monday, January 18, 2010
In November 09 edition of Top Gear Magazine, Dom Duhan was fortunate enough to try out a driver training F1 Simulator from a well known F1 team. The track, Barcelona, the car, an unnamed car from last season. The simulator was bespoke for the team and was highly accurate.

So how did he get on? Well, with Darren Turner present - one of a team of F1 testers and drivers, the standard would be high.

After getting acclimatised to the cockpit - a full motion system with accurate forces on the wheel, Dom's first 8 lap run saw him immediately on the pace with a 1.24xxx. Unfortunately for Dom, the field of view gave him a bout of motion sickness almost immediately!

Luckily this did not stop his competitive nature and after another couple of 8 lap runs Dom got down to a respectable 21.6, which was just over a second off the F1 driver times and Darren, not bad after 24 laps!

Dom said "It was a fantastic experience and great to meet up with a driver of Darren's calibre, big thanks to the F1 team and Top Gear. I hope this paves the way for Sim Racing teams to become a part of F1 testing, providing thousands of hours of lap data for a fraction of the cost of running on a track."

By: Dom Duhan

The F1 sim felt similar to what we already drive (it wasn’t RF Pro, but a bespoke sim) I acclimatised to the sim pretty quickly despite not driving it before. I found it surprising that it was so close to what we already drive, however learning nuances on the fly was a little difficult! I decided as soon as I got it to really attack it.

Firstly careful of kerbs, I found that out with a couple of crazy moments testing the limits in the first 8 laps or so, gravel traps with high FFB and the motion platform are entertaining to say the least.  Even running a couple of wheels on the kerbs vibrated the whole platform so much it was difficult to keep in a straight line.  I was worried about the physicality with the high FFB of it before I started but after a few laps you get used to the forces, though I wasn’t as smooth as normal and the car was harder to counter-steer.

The car feel on track was very good, and due to the motion platform coupled with the strong force feedback, I received much more in the way of sensory input.  I would say that it felt like F1C, high speed corners in general were quite easy to take, you could control the snappy moments if you predicted it.  The slower corners were more tricky getting the power down and generally much more fun, you had to be aggressive to be fast however.

Braking was literally slam on the brakes as hard as possible then release as the aero effect reduces.  I had to match the RPM to down shift which was a bit tricky at first as all I wanted to do was slam down 4 gears haha, in fact this took me some time to get used to and I still didn’t get it right at the end.

The brakes were important, firstly I used a load cell brake, felt great actually. What I did find funny was the sim racer technique of using the brake to turn the car with a little bit of throttle worked well, though I didn’t change the setup (I would have put more rearward brake).  The engineer told me that they never like to run brakes to the rear, brakes are determined by how much locking there is on the front, so once the fronts no longer lock-up that should be the optimum brake bias.  I said that sim racers use the brakes more for steering into a corner and run low brake bias – his response was that in a real life situation it was too dangerous to run brake bias too far back.

So after running around 3×8 laps and feeling very ill from the Field Of View bizarrely,  I was satisfied with the performance.  I know its easy to say but without this I could have put in about 100 laps and I think I would have been much faster. Still there were a few surprised people there.

Lastly, the engineer told me that simulators will be as important as wind tunnel technology in future, so much can be tested at a cheaper cost using simulators over track days.  The sim is also perfect for drivers to get used to the controls in the real cars, something as sim racers we know about, however most F1 drivers don’t have a keyboard in the cockpit hehe.  I can foresee simracing teams being involved with testing for F1 teams, providing telemetry, replays even rudimentary setups.
