World Rally Championship 2 – New Previews

Sunday, July 17, 2011

Black Bean Games has released a first batch of previews of their upcoming second World Rally Championship title for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the PC.

The previews show various stage environments and the brand-new Prodrive Mini WRC car in action. Unfortunately, the previews come with some worrying quotes from Black Bean’s Davide Latina to IGN regarding the improvements of the new version.

While many people had hoped Black Bean would be moving more towards realism with the second version, it seems like the Italian studio is heading quite in the opposite direction as Latina explains:

“WRC was pretty good, the driving model was absolutely fine, but the general graphical standard was generating criticism, both in the media and WRC followers and racing game fans. So we decided to improve the game dramatically in that area,” he says. “70% of our effort has gone into improving the graphics.”

Aside from graphic improvements, Black Bean also plans on making the title more accessible as Latina comments: “A realistic game can’t be too frustrating, too hard to play; it can’t be too close to simulation.”

There’s no word on whether or not the new version will not just improve the stage graphics but also the unrealistic stage design that plagued its predecessor. The full article on IGN can be checked out here.

WRC 2 Presentation at Acropolis Rally 2011

Wednesday, July 06, 2011
T he official “Rally of the Gods” in Greece is over, the results are in, and Sébastien Ogier is the winner. However, The Greek website GameOver states that racers can change what is now history with the inclusion of the Acropolis Rally and other authentic rally tracks in the sequel to Milestone’s World Rally Championship: WRC 2.

Marc de Jong (Director of Commercial Development & Project Leader Interactive Games at North One Sport) and Davide Latina (Communication Manager, BlackBean games) spoke at a press event during the official Acropolis Rally this weekend.

Marc was quick to admit WRC’s 2010 shortcomings, as the game presented “unexpected challenges to manage.” He promises in WRC 2 to include various road surfaces and historic and futuristic elements that will make for a true WRC simulation experience.

Davide spoke more on the three pillars WRC needed to improve upon: graphics, gameplay, and content. He said they collected feedback from gamers and official drivers to determine how to improve in WRC 2.Graphics inside and outside the car and the environment are receiving an overhaul. In discussing gameplay changes, Davide said that “the handling of the car must reflect the real car,” which suggests a more simulated than arcade experience.

World Rally Championship 2011 Gets Release Window

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

World Rally Championship 2010, developed by Milestone and published by Black Bean, received a lot of attention from RSC and its followers last year. The air has since settled and not much news has been released regarding the upcoming sequel, WRC 2011. However, Ubisoft has finally teased the world with an update that verifies WRC 2011 is coming this fall to four different platforms.

The update indeed comes from Ubisoft and not WRC 2010’s publisher Black Bean, Since Ubisoft has acquired Black Bean’s UK publishing rights. Ubisoft has posted on its release schedule that World Rally Championship 2011 will come out in October for  Xbox 360, 3DS, PC, and PS3.

The information did not state if Milestone would be developing this year’s WRC title or not.

With an October release, I would be shocked if World Rally Championship 2011 does not make an appearance at E3 next month. Hopefully this will be the first good racing sim on the 3DS. Even if the 3DS port is less than stellar, the powerful platforms still have a chance at a good game.

WRC 2010: Mexico Rally – S2000 Ford Fiesta – Video

Thursday, October 07, 2010
Courtesy of our friends over at Inside Sim Tv Darrins gives us his thoughts on the new WRC title.

As promised I would start posting more in game videos of WRC. This was a request for an S2000 car at a stage in the Mexico Rally.

Some keep mentioning that the stages are too wide. This is not the case here at this stage in Mexico.. Also what may look like a wide road, doesn’t seem as wide when you’re traveling over 120 MPH through it with very little traction ..

I’ll say it again, this is NOT RBRs replacement. Hardcore rally drivers please stop complaining that this isn’t the next Richard Burns Rally. This is the equivalent to F1 2010. They are both great racing games in my opinion, but neither will cater to the die hard / hard core sim racers or elitists that want nothing less than a pure simulation. Nothing wrong with that, I was one of them a few years ago and still want my hardcore racing fix.

Personally, I love the hard core sims, but as I get busier and older, I find less time to be a top level sim racer. Games like this make sim racing fun for me and make it more of a plug and play experience.

I’ve raced against some of the best drivers in the world online and have had a blast doing it..But it’s very time consuming and takes it away from gaming, and makes it more of a sport or hobby.

As I’ve become less of an elitist, I’ve learned to really enjoy the offerings from Codemasters, Milestone, Turn 10 and Polyphony. Luckily for the hardcore sim racer in me, there’s lots of other titles out or in development.

I guess what I’m getting at.. Instead of trying to beat up Milestone because they didn’t make the next RBR. Applaud them for creating a game in the genre we love, that may help bring more hard core sim racers into our community.. Anything wrong with that ?

Check out my new vid ! More to come with some picture in picture of myself or Shaun driving.

World Rally Championship – Full Video of 3 Germany Stages

Friday, September 17, 2010

Alan Boiston of VVV Gamer has released some excellent new videos of Black Bean’s upcoming World Rally Championship title, showing us three stages of Rally Deutschland in full length as well as a closer look to the title’s menu interface.

The real Rally Deutschland is perhaps the WRC rally offering the most variety as stages range from runs through the ultra-narrow vineyards featuring plenty of hairpins to fast-flowing Saarland-area roads to the brutal 50-kilometer concrete Arena Panzerplatte stage – The longest in all of the WRC. How does Black Bean’s fictional version compare? Check out for yourself below.

Developed by Milestone, World Rally Championship will be bringing all the action of the WRC to the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the PC. The game will feature all 13 rally events from the 2010 schedule and cars from the WRC, Junior WRC and the Production WRC class. World Rally Championship is planned to be released in on October 8th 2010.

World Rally Championship – New Video Trailer

Friday, September 03, 2010

Black Bean Games has released a new video trailer of their upcoming World Rally Championship title for the PC, Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

The trailer blends real life WRC footage with gameplay action from the upcoming title, also included are sneak-peaks of the title’s menu interface.

Black Bean Games has also announced that the Australian Drum & Bass band Pendulum will be featured in the upcoming title. Pendulum music was also included in the video trailer but sadly got blocked out by Warner Music on Youtube, hence the missing audio in the trailer.

World Rally Championship – Gamescom Gameplay Video

Sunday, August 29, 2010

While F1 2010 and Gran Turismo 5 made quite an impact on the Gamescom expo that ended in Cologne a few hours ago, Black Bean’s World Rally Championship title only had a low-key presence at the event.  Probably because the title has been delayed.

Below is a new gameplay video captured at the Gamescom, showing some driving on a gravel stage. The used stage seems to be rather short as the 2:19 minute video covers over 50% of the whole stage.

WRC Review

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Eurogamer has released a very interesting hands-on article of Black Bean’s upcoming World Rally championship for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The article includes some already-known facts alongside plenty of interesting info, Eurogamer seems to confirm the positive impressions that other testers of the preview version already mentioned:

It’s also looking more and more like a success. At E3, WRC’s handling had the right feel, but was often unpredictable. Weeks later in Milan it’s taking shape beautifully. I try the game on Finnish dirt, Swedish snow, Jordanian sand and German tarmac, and grip is finely modulated, progressive and surprisingly subtle, with noticeable rather than pronounced surface feedback.

The article also touches on the much-discussed fact that the title won’t include any real WRC but shorter fictional tracks that have been modelled to reflect the atmosphere at the real rallies:

“So we analyse with deep research of the real location of the rally, go along the track and take photos to understand the characteristics of the ground, the vegetation, the landscape, what you can see from the road…” says Paglianti. “And then, when we have all these elements, we started to recreate based upon various stages. It’s not exactly the same, but they have some links to the real ones. Also we put along the stages the typical elements, for example in Finland there’s a very famous jump in the rally and we recreate the shape of that jump.”

Below are some new preview images, the article explains that not all stages in the preview version have been up to the same standard yet so take the graphics of the previews with a slight grain of salt.

Alan seems to be quite pleased with the physics on both the PC and consoles, comparing the handling to the early Colin McRae titles that earned that franchise a reputation among sim racers.
