A big 3-D TV

Wednesday, January 06, 2010

I am continuing my series on 3D.  We feel 2010 will be the year it all gets busy.  The commitment seems to be there and lets trust the market says "yes".  Our sim driving will be totally enhanced.

With a massive 82 inch, 3-D-ready television, TV laggard Mitsubishi attracted fresh buzz at the 2009 CES. The company is betting its clear and bright rear projection set will take some bite out of TV heavies like Sony, Panasonic and Samsung.

Yes, 3-D TVs like these will require consumers to wear special glasses. And most folks have just gotten done upgrading to a flat panel that is most likely not 3-D ready. But Mitsubishi hopes to bridge this gap with a TV set that works both with 2-D and the new 3-D programming that's rolling out. ESPN just announced it will be launching a 3-D network that will highlight 84 sports events this year, including matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. And Discovery Communications announced its own 3-D network.

There are drawbacks to this TV: rear projection sets like this have bulbs that must be replaced from time and time. And there is cleaning and other maintenance. But still, an 82 inch 3-D set with a street price that could fall below $3,000 by mid 2010?

Mitsubishi just might have just a 3-D winner on its hands. GT5 is going 3D and Sony have declared 2010 as the "Year of 3D" so with CES this year lets see what comes out.

A Big Wide 43" Curved Screen.

It made my Christmas wish list but I'm still waiting.

Ostendo's monster 2880 x 900 quad-DLP (2ms) display has been quietly on sale directly from the Ostendo mothership since late August. A couple of companies like Alienware and NEC have previously badge engineered the same unit.

Ostendo tell us most of the units sold have been for defense simulation and training, but there are apparently some gamers out there hardcore enough to stomach the US$6,499 price tag -- including a few who've purchased multiple units. We're also told that multi-monitor CRVD applications are forthcoming, which sounds insane -- and is even wilder on video.

We will follow up with video of this baby in action.  It does not fit the LCD stand on the VisionRacer sorry!
